I am lit from inside and I cannot check whether it reaches you.
Not illustrated to look like a principle — built out of a material that already behaves like one. Clay hardens around whatever is set on it. Copper changes color where it's been touched and doesn't change back. Every figure is caught mid-act, not finished and enshrined.
Each speaks only about itself. None of them makes a claim about you.
I am lit from inside and I cannot check whether it reaches you.
I take the shape of whatever is pressed into me, and I keep it.
I am solid until I am held, and then I am not.
Where I have been touched I turn a different color, and I do not turn back.
I rust along the edge that faces the thing I am defending.
I am eaten by everyone who never sees the wall I am built into.
I harden around whatever is set on me. It is the only way I hold.
The strike already happened. I am what it left standing.
I am the solvent. Nothing I touch keeps its edge, including me.
I am in the middle of subtracting, and I am not finished.
I am the burning end of a fire that cannot be put out. I take, and take.
I am the smoke end of the same fire. I let go of what I never chose to hold.
I grow around the thing that entered me. The swelling is the knowledge.
I am the shape of what has not been conceived. I am gravid with nothing yet.
That's the whole of it. The same fourteen live in everyone; what differs is which ones preside, which ones are working in a material that doesn't suit them, and which rooms they happen to stand in. That arrangement is what an assessment describes.
